It efficiently processes recyclables collected through the City’s door-to-door programs and plays a crucial role in our strategy to boost recycling efforts and prolong the life of landfill sites.
The City's facility is making great strides, currently processing 25 tonnes of recyclables daily, with plans to expand to 65 tonnes when fully operational! They have already created jobs for 60 Capetonians at the plant, alongside 20 more at the collection point. As it grows, it will generate around 160 jobs and foster even more opportunities downstream in the manufacturing chain.
Barry Tranter and Louise Kinrade, members of the KERA Committee, joined Councilor Carolynne Franklin and others on Friday, July 31st, for a tour of the plant. They both found the experience interesting and informative. Kirstenhof is a proud recycling community, and it was a great opportunity to gain insight into how the recycling process works from the inside.
The City encourages residents to continue separating their recyclable materials at home and to take advantage of available recycling services and drop-off facilities. By separating recyclable materials such as paper, cardboard, plastics, tins, and glass from general waste, residents can help ensure that valuable resources are recovered and reused.
